'Act of Valor' Review
Published in ReviewsTMP explores the shadowy and oft-unrecognized world of the U.S. Navy SEALS, one of will, heart, violence, and the dogged determination of our country's most feared and fearless soldiers.
While remakes, re-imaginings, and prequels to older films are generally regarded by the mainstream public to be anything from greedy filmmaker missteps to outright cinematic sacrilege, I was for one thrilled to hear about a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 horror classic The Thing being developed. Several years later, horror fans can now rejoice as Carpenter's horrific, shape-shifting monstrosity has finally returned in all it's terrifying glory.
Reality does often give us stories that fiction often pales in comparison to. Knowing that there are true heroes that live among us, forging along paths that few would dare to tread gives us all hope that there is good in this world and it's worth fighting for. In the incredible tale of Sam Childers, the violent, drug-addicted biker turned Christian soldier for the oft-forgotten orphans of Africa, we learn firsthand not only that everyone is worthy of a second chance, but a man with a mission can truly change the world, one bullet at a time.
The magic and majesty of baseball has enamored America for over 150 years. A staple of our culture, there isn't an American alive who hasn't tasted the sport at some time in their lives. So powerfully ingrained is the sport that when a film comes out with baseball as its focus, people are naturally drawn to it. And with Moneyball, the story of the birth of sabremetrics and the ultimate changing of the game, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill put it right in the sweet spot in this brilliantly entertaining and rousing film.
With all the Marvel and DC films coming out lately, not to mention the new Superman and Batman films on the horizon, the popularity of superhero movies is at an all time high. Everywhere audience members turn another mainstream actor is gracing the screen in a costume that showcases a massive, ripped physique that mirrors their comic counterpart. Leave it to the studios to ensure that reality will always imitate art.
The World of Warcraft Movie: A Quick and Dirty Guide to Understanding World of Warcraft and the Upcoming Film
Published in Movie StuffThere is a world that exists within our world. It is a realm of pure imagination. It is the haven of escape for millions upon millions of gamers worldwide. And it is coming to a theater near you. I'm speaking about the juggernaut of the gaming world, that unstoppable giant created by famed company Blizzard. I'm speaking of World of Warcraft. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG or MMO to those veterans of the game) has developed a following greater than most real world followings. Its popularity has spawned real world families, communities, and even economies. Its population and GNP rivals that of most countries on the planet. And soon, it will come storming onto the big screen in all its magnificent splendor. But to many people, even gamers, the name World of Warcraft (dubbed "WoW" by some) is just a name surrounded by an even greater mystery: what is it exactly? What follows is a nutshell guide intended to inform and educate moviegoers about World of Warcraft, its digital inhabitants, and the power players behind the epic adaptation.
The moment I heard that Dreamworks would be producing the film adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens I was probably one of the most excited fanboys in the state of Texas and that excitement grew exponentially as it was announced that the epically badass Daniel Craig and fan favorite hottie Olivia Wilde would be starring and comic adaptation guru Jon Favreau would be directing. Then came the greatest news of all: screen legend Harrison Ford was set to star, making the epic return to sci-fi that we have all anticipated for decades. And I am pleased to report that all of this terrific news has culminated in one seriously awesome sci-fi/western romp as kick-ass and visually impressive as we all hoped for.
Universal Retreats From "The Dark Tower"
Published in MovieI've always considered my earliest memories to be a guiding light by which I navigate my life as an entertainer. These memories and the emotions attached to them provide an awesome foundation for my creativity and it is an exceedingly rare opportunity when I am afforded the chance to experience a medium that taps that very foundation for me. Like a children's book hearkening back to those innocent and youthful days when pure imagination was the key to unlocking any door, Another Earth spins a beautifully simple story that plumbs the depths of not just the heart and mind, but of the prismatic wonder that is the human condition.
