My disconnect with the characters of The Walking Dead is so frustrating. I know; I've used that word many times well reviewing this show, but that's honestly how I feel week to week. There is stuff to like, but it's sad because, if the show tried harder, it would be stuff to LOVE.
Take the last scene of "Secrets" for instance. A lot of stuff happened, a lot of...well, secrets were revealed. Rick found out about the pregnancy. Lori revealed that her and Shane had an affair. And you know how it is handled? With nothing more than a "meh" out of Rick and an admission he knew all along. And all impact that that scene could of had was then drained away.
I hate to say it but, of all the shows to ever grace AMC, The Walking Dead is probably the weakest (although I haven't heard the greatest things about Hell on Wheels or The Killing, and have seen neither). But it doesn't HAVE to be. This show can be amazing, and it just pisses me off that it's not. But I've talked my ear off about this subject, so I'll refrain from mentioning it.
So not talking about the final scene, how was the rest of the episode? Eh. It wasn't bad, but once again, The Walking Dead is in this zone of complete and utter tranquility (if you would describe the zombie apocalypse as tranquil). The episode mostly spent time establishing plot points, and increasing (maybe?) some of the tension. Overall, there's not much to say about it because not much happened. Yup, that seems to be The Walking Dead's curse at this point. Hopefully we'll get some actual plot in the next episode, which admittedly looks badass. I guess we shall see.
Score: 7.0 out of 10
Loose Ends:
-The fact that two regular characters (Shane and Andrea) having sense didn't affect me in the least is PROBABLY not very good.
-Andrea doesn't mess around though. After firing bullet holes through a horde of zombies, she just launched herself at Shane's package. What a strange fetish.
-Speaking of Shane, who turned his Asshole Meter up to maximum? His conversation with Dale was insanely dark and unhinged.
-Speaking of Dale, he seems to be dabbing his nose in everyone's business. Which is the exact opposite of poor Glenn, who seems to want nothing more than to bang Maggie but has all these secrets thrust upon him.
-That said, the moment where he reveals his secrets to Dale was pretty funny.
-So we finally got the White Beard Duel between Hershel and Dale that I asked for last week. I think Hershel won.
-So next week's episode is the midseason finale, which means this column will be going on hiatus until it returns in the Spring. Also, I will have the review for next week's episode up on time, I promise!
