Most of the time, I talk about the pros/cons of the trailer before I actually show you the trailer. But this time, I think you need to really see it for yourself before you find out my thoughts. So here ya go:
Alright, so I hope you've watched the trailer by the time you got to this point. Because, if you have, you would already know how much promise this film has. Honestly, I've been looking forward to this film ever since I first heard the plot summary (and the casting of Steve Carrell, one of my favorite comedic actors of the modern era). Hell, I even choose the film as one of my most anticipated films of 2012. For the first time, though, we're actually seeing real footage for the film and, surprisingly, my excitement hasn't wained in the slightest. In fact, it might have heightened. This film seems different from most other apocalypse movies, and refreshingly so. Steve Carrell looks great in the lead role, and I'm excited to see another dramatic turn from him. What surprised me most about this trailer is Keira Knightley, who seems totally out of her element in an apocalypse dramatic comedy. Yet she seems to be just as great as Carrell. Honestly, it's just nice to see her NOT dressed in period clothing with a monarcic British accent. There's so much good to be had here...Patton Oswalt, TJ Miller, Rob Corddry, Gillian Jacobs...this cast is talented, the plot is exciting, and the script seems great. I hope writer/director Lorene Scafaria (who wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) manages to make all these pieces work together in a way that is truly unique.
Here's the official plot synopsis:
Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity's last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world's – brighten.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens June 22.
