Extras - An adventure in the background

Ah, the work of an extra.  Filling in the background of a shot, adding depth to the foreground, bringing life to a scene.  Though the parts usually have no lines, or titles, extras play a vital role in filmmaking.  They create a sense of reality and help solidify that delicate boundary, the 4th Wall, between the action and the audience.

Recently, as I was commuting from my day job to home, a commercial aired over my favorite radio station that brought back memories of my younger, more idealistic days in the industry.  I was a young and naïve performer filled with more hope than knowledge and I, as many before and I’m certain many after me will be, was taken in by one of the oldest talent scams in the business.
