Predators

Some of you may have realized this by now, but for some reason I have a strong affinity for those old, cheesy, creature features.  One of my favorites when I was growing up was the Predator movies.  They still have a soft spot in my heart and you better believe I have them in glorious blu-ray.  I even sat through the AVP movies (yes both of them) because I love the Predator lore so much.  Needless to say when I caught wind of the new movie, Robert Rodriguez’s Predators, the nerd inside me started jumping for joy.

Under the direction of Nimrod Antal (funny name I know, but he’s good), this project is set to release July 7, 2010.  The story of this one focuses on a group of elite super killers who land on the Predator home planet where they are hunted and must fight to survive.  Personally I think the change of story is great and much needed.  There are only so many times you can send an alien creature to earth causing untold havoc before it gets stale.  Now we—humans—are the aliens on a very hostile planet.
The cast is a varied and interesting one, not particularly filled with people I think of when ‘action movie’ comes to mind.  Among the cast is Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, and most recently Laurence Fishburne.  Like I said, not really the action movie types, but I think they can pull it together as they are all great actors.  Laurence Fishbure actually just joined the cast within the past couple weeks as they have been filming down in Austin Texas.  His role has been described as sort of the mentor in the group as he plays Roland a man who has survived among the Predators for a number of years.  It could be an interesting character and one who most definitely can bring the beat down when necessary.
I was already excited about the prospect of this movie but with the recent announcement that this film is being shot to be R-rated (as it should be) my enthusiasm has hit a new high.  Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of ways this project can go bad, but at this point, with a new studio, new script and new director behind the franchise, I feel I can safely give this film the benefit of the doubt.
The story is still somewhat under-wraps so any or all of this information may change.  I have heard rumors that it is no longer on the Predator home world but another of their ‘hunting planets’.  So take all of this info with a grain of salt, but I think it is still safe to be excited about this franchises reboot.
