Who is it, you ask? Gareth Edwards. I'm sure many of you are still shaking your heads and wondering who I'm talking about, but I assure you, it's a name to be excited about; at least for this project. Gareth Edwards most recent work was a indie film called Monsters. It was a very low budget monster movie (I mean, very low budget...in the low six figure region) that has been winning awards all over the world.

Monsters was about an monster alien invasion that happens in a quarantined Mexico. It was handled so incredibly well, and while the monsters were rarely seen, it showed that Gareth is a master at this genre. The film has garnered him incredible amount of attention from Hollywood, and now he's landed the Godzilla job.
What he was able to do with the creature feature genre on such a low budget was nothing short of miraculous, so I can only imagine what he'll be able to do with a much bigger budget and an already established monster. To be honest, I'm getting nothing but good vibes from this film so far. The last Hollywood attempt at Godzilla in 1998 was more of a wreck than it should have been.

Let's face it, the industry has grown greatly since then. With movies like Cloverfield, Monsters, and even King Kong expanding and developing the genre it's easy to see how much better Godzilla could be handled today. Besides that Legendary and Warner Bros are the studios working together to make this happen. And what were the last things they did....Oh yeah! The Dark Knight and Inception.
The bottom line here is with this director signed on, there is plenty to be excited about for this movie. The studios are still looking for a writer on the script, but with Gareth Edwards coming on, that should be handled shortly. As far as I know they are still aiming for a 2012 release date, so expect more news coming from this film soon.
