I've been a fan of Whedon's for a while now, and still watch Firefly and Serenity on a regular basis (I'm a brown-coat at heart). So when rumors started flying around say that he was in the running to direct The Avengers, I tried to keep from drooling. The man really understands nerds, and how to keep them happy while telling a great story. All in all he's perfect for the job.
Even so such rumors had to be taken with a grain of salt, since you don't want to get your hopes up too high. Well worry no more! Yesterday at the San Diego Comic-Con Joss Whedon himself, confirmed he will helming the superhero team-up movie. Here's his announcement:
“It’s not an official thing; I think because Marvel couldn’t afford a press release...so can we make that an official thing? I’m directing The Avengers.”
Truthfully I still would have loved to see what Jon Favreau would have done with The Avengers. I think Iron Man really brought around a new group of fans and rekindled interest in the Marvel franchises. Regardless this is incredible news and I think it's safe to say the film is in good hands.
