It's very rare that a studio decides to start working on a sequel to a movie that is still being filmed. I mean as I type Ryan Reynolds and director Martin Campbell are in New Orleans shooting the movie. Most of the time if a sequel is given the go ahead early, it's normally sometime during post-production when everyone has a general idea of what it's going to look like.

Regardless, Warner Bros have hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim (who all worked on Lantern's screenplay) to develop a story treatment for a sequel. This time they want an even broader scale however, and have asked for a story about the head of the intergalactic police force; the Green Lantern Corps.
Personally I would love to see that movie, because it's an aspect that other comic book movies just don't have; epic scale. All other things in comic books typically stay on Earth (for many it's only within one city as well), so taking a story to a galaxy wide setting is something fans haven't seen before, and is common with Green Lantern books. It could be fun, but the problem is we just don't know if the first one is going to be any good.

Don't get excited...this is just a fan rendering
Obviously starting any work on the sequel at this point speaks to the confidence Warner Bros (and the newly formed DC Entertainment) have in the film. I hope their feelings are well founded and that we get a good Green Lantern movie. I guess we'll find that out next Summer, but at least Green Lantern fans can rejoice that they'll see more of him on the big screen...unless it's a complete and total flop that is.
