Godzilla gets captured by another Hollywood studio

All right so maybe the 1998 Godzilla movie with Mathew Broderick wasn't exactly your favorite film of all time, or even your favorite monster film, but it wasn't the most painful thing in the world to watch either.  Well it looks like Hollywood is ramping up to bring the big green monster back to our shores.

Variety has learned that Legendary Pictures has secured the rights to Godzilla and have announced their intentions to put the iconic figure onto the screen as early as 2012 (that's assuming we aren't all blown up by that point).  For those of you who are rolling your eyes or dreading another screw up of the franchise take heart.  So far the Legendary Pictures head cheese, Thomas Tull is telling us what we want to hear:

"Our plans are to produce the GODZILLA that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed the character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

So hopefully this means we'll get to see a true Godzilla movie soon.  I'm more hyped by the fact Legendary is handling the new film, because so far they have a very impressive track record, especially when it comes to adaptations and respecting the source material.  You may remember some of their films like The Dark Knight, 300, The Watchmen, and the forthcoming Clash of the Titans.  That's a pretty impressive pedigree and one well suited for an over-sized lizard.

Godzilla has been out of action since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars (came out in Japan and is highly possible you never heard of it) and the franchise has always been one of my favorites and most impactful on me as a child.  So far no creatives (writers, directors, etc) have been attached to the project; it's still just getting started, but as more info comes out you can bet we'll let you know.  Just take comfort in the fact that for the moment, it's probably in the best hands possible.
