Ah, Pirates. We can all thank Mr. Johnny Depp and his portrayal of Capt. Jack Sparrow for making pirates fun and cool again. With all their swashbuckling and silly colloquialisms, they’re always a blast to watch in film.  I just wish that this little tidbit I’m writing here was a review on the newest Pirates of the Caribbean film or even an historical diatribe on Capts. Henry Every or William Kidd.

“Nobody knows anything,” says William Goldman, writer of such Oscar winning scripts as Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and All The President’s Men. I ran across it again recently in an article in England’s superb music magazine Mojo on the film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, possibly the most (and in a way wonderfully) horrid and inane movie ever made and a flop of staggering proportions.

Over on The Hollywood Reporter’s website there is a Round Table discussion with the directors of some of the top pick’s (some say shoo-ins) for this year’s Academy Award Best Picture nominations. They are: James Cameron (Avatar), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Peter Jackson (The Lovely Bones), Jason Reitman (Up In The Air), And Lee Daniels (Precious).

Recently, as I was commuting from my day job to home, a commercial aired over my favorite radio station that brought back memories of my younger, more idealistic days in the industry.  I was a young and naïve performer filled with more hope than knowledge and I, as many before and I’m certain many after me will be, was taken in by one of the oldest talent scams in the business.
